Grandpa Bagel is the party's self-appointed tank — a cheerful elderly adventurer who insists his decades of experience make him the ideal frontline. Mechanically he fulfills the tank role with the highest base HP, innate damage reduction, and an AI script that prioritizes standing between enemies and the rest of the party. Narratively he is oblivious to danger, quoting outdated dungeon guides while absorbing hits that would one-shot Madeleine.

Bagel deals moderate melee damage with a slow two-handed weapon. His DPS is not the focus — keeping him alive keeps enemy focus on him rather than on Klepon or Madeleine. Most of your proactive healing should anticipate Bagel's health curve during tank-buster mechanics.

Bagel's Stats and Abilities

Grandpa Bagel has the highest max HP in the party, scaling faster with level than other members. His passive Thick Crust grants 8% flat damage reduction, rising to 12% at level 30. His auto-battle ability rotation includes Shield Bash (short threat spike), Sturdy Stance (self damage reduction for three seconds, AI-triggered below 40% HP), and a basic melee swing.

You cannot trigger Bagel's abilities manually. Sturdy Stance fires on his AI timer — watch for the visual shield icon and reduce emergency healing if his self-buff is active. Guardian Ward from Kale's healing spells stacks visually with Sturdy Stance but calculates absorption separately.

Healing Priorities for Bagel

Pre-shield Bagel before known heavy hits rather than reactive healing after damage lands. Guardian Ward applied two seconds before a boss tank-buster prevents more total damage than Vital Surge cast afterward. Maintain Renewing Pulse HoT stacks on Bagel during sustained damage phases even when his health looks stable — his HP pool is large enough that percentage-based damage sneaks up slowly.

When Klepon pulls extra enemies, Bagel's threat AI splits focus and his health drops faster. This is the most common death scenario for Bagel in mid-game — not boss mechanics but accidental multi-pulls. Pause combat with controls if needed and prioritize Circle of Mending for party-wide recovery while Bagel re-establishes aggro.

Track Bagel's Sturdy Stance icon on the party frame. Healing during his self-buff wastes mana on a window where he already has damage reduction active.

Synergies and Build Tips

Skill tree nodes in the Support branch grant Bagel-specific bonuses: extra HP per point, faster Sturdy Stance cooldown, and a late-game node that reflects 5% of damage taken back to attackers. The healer focus build invests heavily here because a durable Bagel reduces total healing needed across entire runs.

Buff spells Inspiration and Haste Prayer increase Bagel's melee damage, shortening fights and indirectly reducing tank damage taken. Barrier of Light before AoE boss attacks gives Bagel a cushion without spending a single-target Ward.
